Often the course requires transport between WFYC and the marina, weather and tide dependent. Our course instructors may be able to help with this but unfortunately they cannot be responsible for the transport of under 18s. Please ensure parents and guardians of under 18s liaise with the instructor at the start of the course in regards to what transport is required.
We are lucky enough at WFYC to be able to instruct in both wheel and tiller driven powerboats. So you can have the opportunity to experience both.

Autumn Series 2024 Race 2 and John Apthorp Super Series
John Apthorp Super Series
Try racing in a club series with the support of RYA instructors
This scheme enables both youngsters and adults to compete in their own full race series supported by RYA instructors.
It provides a combination of boat hire, race entry and instructor support.
The races will “piggy-back” on the normal club dinghy races, using the same race officer, starting line and race course. The difference will be that participants have their own, independent support from instructors, and will compete in their own race series complete with trophies for the top 3 placed.
This is a really great opportunity for students engaged with both the RYA OnBoard and YSS programmes, as well as those club members keen to start racing but who would feel more comfortable with some support.
John Apthop has been a generous beneficiary of the club for many years. He has had a big impact on the RYA training centres fleet of boats therefore we celebrate and thank his kind donations by this series being dedicated to him.
Prerequisites:
RYA stage 3 or RYA Level 2 minimum requirements
Walton and Frinton Yacht Club Member
Price: Free to members
The series will be scored under the PY low point scoring system and 1 discard for every 3 races sailed.
There are 6 races in the series and ideally competitors should compete in 4 of them.
We recommend you have a waterproof sailing watch to help you with race start sequences.
Memory Cafe - Walton Arts Festival
Walton friendship and bereavement café gather for a nostalgic tea party, sharing and recording their stories with Tendring Community Writers. Fundraising donations for Alzheimer and Dementia charities
RYA Level 1 - Start Sailing
A course for complete beginners. Learn how to sail in all directions and awareness of launching and recovery
Over 2 or 3 days, if the course is over 3 days it will be a short evening session on day 1.
You can expect 12 hours of tuition over 2 or 3 days. We run our courses on smaller instructor to student ratios here at WFYC to ensure you get the best possible experience.
You have the option of learning to sail in a larger, double handed boat with an instructor onboard for level 1, gradually moving out of the boat as you progress through the levels. If you sign up to this option you can expect 2 students to 1 instructor.
On the first day of your course your instructor will meet you and explain the aims of the course as well as discussing your own expectations and course outcome. You will have the chance to meet and talk to other course participants before being given a tour of the sailing area. There will be time to change into your sailing gear after the initial shore briefing so do not worry about coming ready to sail.
There will be a good break for lunch on both days and plenty of time for you to ask questions.
What you will need:
You are taking part in a watersport and you are likely to get wet, so always remember a change of clothes and a towel. Clothing for training – wetsuits are ideal, but if not, lightweight stuff that dries easily, with a couple of layers if it is cold, plus waterproofs.
Trainers or dinghy boots for the feet
Hats- always a woolly hat! remember it will always feel colder on the water. AND a wide brimmed hat if sunny
Sun bloc - helps prevent windburn and sunburn
Packed lunch + water or other drink
Medication- if required- clearly labelled with instructions and name. please make instructor aware
Optional extras: knee pads, sailing gloves
Buoyancy aids will be provided by the club.
Please arrive at the clubhouse 15 mins before the start time. Students will be met by an instructor at the front of the clubhouse on the benches.
If you have any questions, please see our FAQ or contact heidi@wfyc.co.uk
RYA Level 3 - Better Sailing
Improve your sailing, consolidating skills and trying new ones in a variety of conditions.
Between The Tides - Walton Arts Festival
Between the Tides is the name of the new Walton Arts Festival. It aims to showcase the flourishing arts scene in Walton on the Naze and surrounding areas, creating the opportunity for local artists and community groups to connect through events and workshops.
